CITAM - International Center for Innovation in Technology and Management

Cyber-infrastructure Initiative

Creating and deploying advanced computer networks, and leveraging the power of information technologies across a variety of industries, have been fundamental to the growth and vitality of economies across the globe. Cyber-infrastructure is the backbone of an information society—encompassing both the physical computing infrastructure and the human capacity to employ computing and information technologies.  The CITAM Cyber-infrastructure Initiative will leverage the strength of RIT and PUCMM capabilities in applied computing, information technology, service management, and telecommunications to address a comprehensive array of workforce and economic development goals related to cyber-infrastructure. This initiative consists of four major programs:

  1. Graduate Education and Graduate Scholarships:  RIT, in conjunction with PUCMM, will deliver its Masters of Science degree programs in Networking and Systems Administration, Telecommunications Engineering Technology, Manufacturing and Service Management in the Dominican Republic.   The delivery model, which will use RIT faculty in conjunction with PUCMM faculty, facilities and administrative support will allow the program to be delivered at a more competitive cost than available in the US.

  2. Collaborative Research:   In 2003, RIT created the Center for Advancing the Study of Cyber-infrastructure (CASCI).  CASCI currently houses seventeen laboratories with research capabilities in advanced communications technology, discovery informatics, bio-informatics, technological literacy, and advanced software engineering, among others.  The resources of CASCI will be engaged to support graduate level research and training programs offered through ITAM’s cyber-infrastructure initiative. Graduate programs offered through the Center will require students to participate in research projects in collaboration with government and industry, and will extend to a variety of areas including:
    • Geographic information systems,
    • E-government,
    • Enterprise computing,
    • IT enabled services (including logistics and distribution services)
    • Development of IT intensive start-up businesses.
  3. Technological Literacy and Training:  PUCMM and RIT are committed to developing the technological literacy and capacity of the citizens of the Dominican Republic to engage in the global economy. Programs considered under this initiative will concentrate on the skills required in both the emergent and incumbent workforces and will be a defined in close collaboration with local industrial, academic, and government partners.

  4. Faculty Development :  CITAM will provide professional development and advanced educational opportunities for faculty from universities across the Dominican Republic.  Faculty development opportunities include post-graduate study, collaborative teaching; and collaborative course development.
