The objective of the Department of Applied Linguistics , one of the seven Departments within the Faculty of Sciences and Humanities, is to coordinate the internal and external course offerings in Spanish, English, and French as foreign languages, within the common and coherent faculty norms and considering the new theoretical and metho do logical theories of Applied Linguistics; also, to promote and encourage study and research within the field of Applied Linguistics.
The Department ascribes to PUCMM's goals of creating professionals who exhibit communication skills in accordance with actual social demands. For these reasons, the acquisition of a foreign language is encouraged, and various literature and social science courses are offered within a context of diversity and cultural exchange.
The Department of Applied Linguistics comprises three areas: Spanish for Foreigners, English, Italian and French. The area of Spanish for Foreigners administers the standard language courses for those students who want to study at our University and whose native language is not Spanish and is also in charge of the programs of interchange with various foreign universities, essentially those of the United States . Within this exchange, we offer language, literature, and social science courses, with an emphasis on Caribbean Studies.
In the area of English , the Department administers a variety of English courses within the University's standard study programs. Furthermore we offer Business English for students in Business Administration, Accounting and Merchandising; English for Tourism for students in Hotel Administration; and English for Nurses.
In the area of French , the Department currently offers all the required courses for those students who are studying for careers in Law.
In the area of Italian , the Department currently offers all the required courses for those students who are studying for Hotel Administration.
Within the future projections in the areas of English, Italian and French is the creation of courses for other specific areas.
